Frequently asked Questions

  • Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight to direct current (DC) electricity.
  • The charge controller charges the battery bank and also regulates the amount of charge to avoid over/under charging of the batteries.
  • The inverter converts DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity needed to run your appliances assembled in your electrical panel.
  • The electrical panel sends power to your lights and other appliances.
  • The meter measures the energy you draw and shows the status of available usable power.
Apart from the obvious benefits to the environment and reduction in your electric bills, switching to a solar energy system provides energy reliability and security.
Photovoltaic could literally be translated as light-electricity. And that’s just what photovoltaic materials and devices do; they convert light energy to electricity. Such energy is produced directly from the sun. It is renewable and to a greater magnitude, the most powerful energy source on earth. It is readily available and will never run out!
Unlike solar hot water, solar panels work on light and not heat which seems to be a common misconception. Solar panels will actually become less efficient as it gets hotter. During the day the photovoltaic cells (solar cells) absorb light and convert it to DC electricity. This electricity is then fed down to the Inverter that converts the electricity to 230v AC, which is then usable by your home and businesses.
There is none. Once your system is installed, electricity production is completely free.
The system requires very minimal maintenance. There are no moving parts; hence there is nothing to break down. The panels may require cleaning every few months, depending on location, to remove any dust on them. However to ensure optimal performance, regular scheduled inspection is advised. Proper care and maintenance will ensure your solar system’s longevity and optimal performance. We offer a number of service options and are happy to look after your system whether we installed it or not. Find out more about Astrum Energy’s service and maintenance packages
Solar power is readily affordable. Recent price drops and improvement in the technology have made it significantly cheaper than other sources of electricity generation. The return on investment for a 2kW system on average is less than 2 years. Thus an average family recovers its cost within this period. The more energy you consume, the shorter the payback period.
Solar Energy produces significant cost savings over petrol and diesel generators. Solar costs are fixed – it is not impacted by changes to Diesel or any other input prices.
During daylight hours, energy from the sun is absorbed by the panels; powers your appliances and stores some in the batteries. When the sun goes down, the inverter automatically sources its energy from the battery bank, providing you with a continuous supply of electricity.
The solar panels will last over 45 years. They come with a full 25-year manufacturer’s warranty. With guaranteed performance efficiency of 90% after 10 years and 80% after 25 years.
We provide high quality deep cycle batteries with a minimum useful life of 5 years.
The average life of an inverter is 5-10 years, and comes with a 2yrs manufacturers warranty.
This depends on your total daily electricity consumption. The more you consume, the bigger the system you will need to power your home or business.
Kindly work out how much electricity you use each day, based on the number of appliances you use, their power rating (in watts) and multiply by how long you use them for each day in hours. The result will be in WH (Watt-Hour), which actually is the amount of your electricity requirement per day
A 2Kw system will produce between 8kWh and 10kWh of electricity each day. The amount of energy produced by the PV panels is based on the amount of ‘Peak Sunlight hours’ received, per location. In Nigeria as a whole, this ranges between 4 and 6 in the South, to as high as 9 in the North. The higher the peak sunlight hours, the fewer PV panels are required to generate the same amount of energy.
This is one of the main reasons why solar energy is more highly suited to Nigeria than the majority of countries; she is blessed with one of the highest levels of solar radiation in the world.
Our experience has shown that the average electricity need for a typical Nigerian household falls between 7kWh and 9kWh each day, if they received 24 hours of electricity. Most households do not receive 24 hours electricity, thus the actual recorded consumption rate is only 1.5kWh.
So a 2kW PV system would produce between 8kW and 10kW of electricity each day, enough to power the average Nigerian household for 24 hours a day.
The panels are installed on the roof so they are exposed to maximum amount of sunlight. They can also be ground mount if there is insufficient roof space. The later is most applicable to businesses with large premises that require huge electricity generation.
The actual installation process should only take 1 day, however for residential solar installations, depending on the size of your house and the system, it can take less than 1 day or 2-3 days at the very most.
All of Astrum Energy’s high-efficiency solar panels come with a 10-12-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 25 year performance guarantee that offers a guarantee that your panels will be performing at least 80% as well as they do now in year 25 giving you peace-of-mind and smooth operation of your business or home.
